Audition Information

**Due to the global health crisis, we have extended the deadline for Dance and are still accepting recorded auditions at this time**

An audition is required for all dance programs (BFAEdM, MFA, BA, and minor). To schedule an audition for the BFA, EdM, or MFA applicants must first complete the Rutgers University application, for more information click here


The LIVE audition consists of a ballet barre (approximately 1 hour) followed by an hour-long modern dance class.

Applicants are required to bring a headshot with them to the audition. All applicants are required to wear footless tights and leotards. Sweatpants, legwarmers, skirts or shoes should not be worn, except for ballet slippers for the ballet portion of your audition. 


Master of Dance Education (EdM) - All applicants who audition in-person or via the recorded option are encouraged to submit an example of choreographic work (10 minute maximum). Examples may contain work set on students. The link to submit a choreography sample is sent directly to applicants after the Mason Gross supplemental application has been submitted.

Master of Fine Arts (MFA) - All applicants are required to submit a choreography sample. Choreography samples should be uploaded directly to the supplemental application. Your digital portfolio should include samples of 3 selected creative works, limited to 12 minutes maximum including solos, and small and large group work (if possible). 


In cases where extreme distance prohibits an in-person audition, permission may be obtained to submit a RECORDED VIDEO audition. To obtain permission to submit a recorded audition please indicate your preference on the Mason Gross Supplemental Audition Application and email If approved to submit a recorded audition, you will be sent a link to submit your recorded audition through an online platform called SlideRoom We will only accept recorded auditions through this platform.

Prospective students submitting an online video audition should include the following in their recorded submission: 

A brief introduction of your name and program you are applying to. 


barre - plie, tendu, degage, rond de jambe, frappe, grand battement

center - tendu, adagio

pirouette - in center and moving across the floor

petit allegro - small jumps

grand allegro - any combination of tour jete, pas de chat, etc.


center combinations: use of spine, curves, plies, footwork and swing combinations

center - full bodied movement combinations, including use of the floor

across the floor - locomotor movements including triplets, runs, jumps, jetes
