REQUIRED MATERIALS | ENGLISH PROFICIENCY | RUTGERS GLOBAL RESOURCES

Required Materials

In addition to the materials required for all applicants to Mason Gross (First Year, Transfer, Graduate), international applicants must also complete the following to apply and enroll at our school:

English Proficiency Requirements

Regardless of U.S. residency status, an English proficiency examination is required of all students whose medium school or secondary schooling has been outside the U.S. in a country where English is not the primary language. A master’s degree completed in the United States is not sufficient to exempt a candidate from an English proficiency examination.

Score reports must be from tests taken within the past two years and submitted directly to the university from the testing service.

The Mason Gross Office of Admission’s preferred ESL test is the TOEFL iBT with all four sections (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking). It is highly recommended applicants take the TOEFL iBT as it includes an accurate assessment of the applicant’s speaking ability which is a vital skill to succeed in our programs.

The Rutgers TOEFL Code is 2765.

International applications required to submit an English Proficiency Exam but fail to complete this requirement, will be considered incomplete and will not receive a decision from the admissions committee.

Undergraduate (BFA/BM)

Review the exams accepted and required minimums at Rutgers Undergraduate Admissions.

Regardless of U.S. residency status, an English proficiency examination is required of all students whose secondary schooling has been outside the United States in a country where English is not the principal language. Score reports must be from tests taken within the past two years and submitted directly to us from the testing service.

Students who have attended an English-speaking medium school may request to have their English Proficiency requirement waived. For more information on waivers, please contact RUinternational@admissions.rutgers.edu (undergraduate only).

Graduate (MFA, MM, MA, DMA, and PhD)

A TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required if a student’s undergraduate education was completed in a non-English speaking country where the primary mode of instruction was in a language other than English.

Applicants may be exempt from submitting English Proficiency exam scores only if they are a United States-trained undergraduate or an international applicant from English-speaking countries with a minimum of three years’ undergraduate education where the primary mode of instruction was English.

Required minimum ESL scores for admission to a Mason Gross degree program are listed below.

TOEFL Internet (iBT) Minimum Score Requirements

  • 83 (All International Graduate MFA, MM, MA, DMA, and PhD applicants, and must earn a minimum of 22 on the writing, 23 on the speaking, 21 on the reading and 17 in the listening portions of the TOEFL iBT exam)
  • 75 (Graduate AD applicants)
