How to Apply

 

The Dance Department at Mason Gross School of the Arts offers Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), Masters in Dance Education (EdM), and  Master of Fine Arts (MFA). Mason Gross School of the Arts also offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a dance minor for Rutgers University Students enrolled in the School of Arts and Sciences. To apply to any of the degrees, applicants must first complete the Rutgers University online application. Five business days after submitting the university application, applicants will be emailed an invitation to complete the Mason Gross supplemental application, where auditions are scheduled. BFA/BA CHECKLIST
  • Rutgers Undergraduate Application, by December 1 (Fall 2018 start) / by October 1 (Spring 2018 start transfer applicants only) 
  • $70 Rutgers application fee
  • Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR)
  • SAT or ACT scores- use school code 2765 for the SAT and 2592 for the ACT
  • GED results (for those that earned a GED)
  • English Proficiency Test results (if required)
  • Mason Gross Supplemental Application–emailed five business days after the university application is submitted
  • Optional: Upload a video sample of your choreography via the supplemental application.
  • Schedule and complete your audition
  • File FASFA (domestic students) by December 1 - although not required, we strongly encourage students to submit a FASFA by the priority deadline of December 1 (transfers by February 1)

    The EdM application is open until June 1. However, applicants interested in scholarship opportunities should submit the application by February 1.
  • Graduate Application Instructions and Checklist

    1.  Rutgers University Graduate Application
    a.  $70 application fee
    b.  Transcripts for all colleges attended
    c.  Three letters of recommendation
    d.  Personal statement

    2.  Mason Gross Supplemental Application
    a.  Five business days after submitting the Rutgers Graduate Application applicants will receive an invitation to complete the Mason Gross Supplemental Application. This is an application/registration for the audition and interview. A series of audition dates, included a recorded audition option, will be displayed for selection.
    b.  $40 application fee
    3.  Audition/Interview
    a.  Live auditions will include a ballet and modern dance class
    b.  Live auditions are highly recommended, however, individuals living more than four hours distance from Rutgers may consider the recorded audition option. If you are approved to submit a recorded audition you will be sent an email with instructions and a link for you to submit your recordings.
    4.  Digital Portfolio
    a.  A digital portfolio of choreographic work, teaching work, and personal work is encouraged for applicants interested in scholarship opportunities.
  • Entrance Requirements

    Five Year BFA+ EdM and EdM Certification Track Applicants
    •  Passing Praxis Core test scores (Reading: 156, Math: 150, Writing: 162)
    a.  or, minimum SAT scores of:
    i.  560 Reading, 540 Math (if taken 2/28/16 or earlier) or
    ii.  610 Reading & Writing or 30 Reading, 570 Math (if taken on or after 3/1/16)
    b.  or, minimum ACT scores of: 23 English, 23 Math
    c.  or, minimum GRE scores of: 155 Verbal, 156 Quantitative
    •  Praxis Core or GRE scores do not have to be submitted at the time of application. However, applicants interested in scholarships should plan to have the Praxis Core or GRE scores reported by February 1.
    •  Entrance Exam for Professional Track Non-Certification Applicants
    GRE: 310 Combined Score on the quantitative and verbal sections, 40 on analytical writing.
    (Any test scores submitted must be less than five years old as of the application deadline. Scores must be official, not self-reported.)

MFA CHECKLIST:

  • Prerequisites

    Applicants for the MFA in Dance must have an undergraduate BFA or BA degree in dance, or its equivalent, and 5 years of post-undergraduate professional experience in the dance field. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, in an area other than dance, may be considered for the MFA if they have significant professional dance experience.

    1. Rutgers University Graduate Application
    • $70 application fee
    • Transcripts for all post-secondary institutions
    • Three letters of recommendation
    • Writing sample: your writing sample should include 5-10 double spaced pages of academic writing (published or non-published), journalism (e.g., substantial critique or essay on creative or other work), or other writing genres.
    2. Mason Gross Supplemental Application
    • Five business days after submitting the Rutgers Graduate Application applicants will receive an invitation to complete the Mason Gross Supplemental Application. This is an application/registration for the audition and interview. A series of audition dates, including a recorded audition option, will be displayed for selection.
    • Choreography sample should include 3 selected creative works, limited to 12 minutes maximum. Include solo, small, and large group work (if possible).
    • $40 application fee
    3. Audition / Interview
    • Live auditions will include a ballet and modern dance class
    • Live auditions are highly recommended, however, individuals living more than four hours distance from Rutgers may consider the recorded audition option. If you are approved to submit a recorded audition you will be sent an email with instructions and a link for you to submit your recordings. Recorded auditions should include the following:
    1. 15 minutes of classical ballet or contemporary SOLO dance class, plus a SOLO world dance form, if appropriate.
    2. 3-5 minute sampling of SOLO improvisational work

CURRENT & FORMER RUTGERS STUDENT CHECKLIST:
Applicants applying to the BFA program who are currently or were formerly a Rutgers University student (at any Rutgers undergraduate school), should follow the checklist below:
  • Email admissions@mgsa.rutgers.edu to be sent the Mason Gross supplemental application by November 15, 2017 for a Spring 2018 start or December 1, 2017 for a Fall 2018 start
  • Schedule and complete your audition
  • Complete School to School Transfer application (for students currently enrolled at Rutgers University)
  • Complete Re-Enrollment Application (for students formerly enrolled at a school within Rutgers University)
  • Note: The School to School Transfer application and the Re-Enrollment application will not be available until February 1, 2018. If you wait to complete the university application, you may miss the available auditions. Therefore, please email admissions@mgsa.rutgers.edu to start the supplemental application during the Fall semester.
  • Current students interested in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Minor, offered through the School of Arts and Sciences, are required to audition at a separate BA/Minor audition. For more information on audition dates, click here or email leidyg@mgsa.rutgers.edu.
