Playwriting and new-play production are integrally connected in this program, which is designed to ground the student thoroughly in the craft of theater writing. This is a full-time, three-year residency-required program that includes regular small-group and individual instruction in playwriting, screenwriting, and dramatic adaptation. The program is augmented by script-in-hand readings, workshops, and full productions. A maximum of two students will be admitted to the program annually.
The program emphasizes the craft of theater writing and the collaborative process of bringing a script to the stage. Students will have a script produced before a public audience in each of the first and second years. In general, third-year students will have scripts premiered in the Rutgers Theater Company’s Emerging Artist Series. The program also requires at least one literary-management internship at a professional theater.
