Visiting Artist Lecture: Sydney Shen

This lecture is presented as part of the fall 2021 Visiting Artist Lecture Series, free and open to all. Registration is required.

Sydney Shen (b. 1989, New Jersey) lives and works in New York. She graduated with a BFA from The Cooper Union in 2011. Sydney’s sculptures and installations examine contradictions such as fear and wonder, pain and pleasure, and sacred and profane.

Sydney has shown her work in a variety of international galleries and contexts. Recent solo exhibitions include: Strange But True at Queens Museum, New York (2021); Misery Whip at Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai (2021), Every Good Boy Does Fine at Sophie Tappeiner, Vienna (2019); and Onion Master at New Museum, New York (2019). Shen received the 2019-2020 Queens Museum-Jerome Foundation Fellowship for Emerging Artists, was a 2019-2020 resident of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace Residency Program, and received a 2018 Queens Arts Fund grant. She is the co-author of the prose-poetry book Perfume Area.
