Visiting Artist Lecture: Josephine Sales

Documentation image of the installation, "Total Running Time" at University of California, Irvine. Comprising four works situated in a three walled white gallery alcove that runs 18 feet by 16 feet by 12 feet 6 inches Rescue, Day for Night, Pulses, and Total Running Time Site; Rescue, a plaster wall relief, and two geometric forms are positioned on the gallery floor. A niche on the rightmost wall contains two manipulated light sources, one of which creates a daylight effect, hence the title Day for Night. Pulses is a sonic piece installed behind the gallery wall. Josephine Sales works with systems of reliance and acts of contingency to consider how disability may expand our relational capacity. Engaging perceptual conditions of access, Sales creates site-specific installations based in cinema, sculpture, sound, and performance. The artist’s work has been presented at Palais de Tokyo, The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Kai Matsumiya, New York and The Shed.  Fellowships include Leonardo, International Society for Arts, Sciences and Technology (2021-2023) and Black Box Residency at University of California Irvine Beall Center for Art + Technology (2022-2023).  Sales received an MFA in Photography from Milton Avery School of the Arts, Bard College and lives and works in New York City.
