Biography

Stephen O’Connell is a core and founding member of the Toronto/Brooklyn-based performance collective bluemouth inc. From 1990 to 1997, he was co-artistic director of Radix Theatre, a site-specific interdisciplinary performance collective in Vancouver. He was the co-founder of FREE FALL, a biennial festival in Toronto, Canada, featuring new and interdisciplinary performance, and PROJET PROJO in Montreal. O’Connell co-created and toured bluemouth inc.’s internationally successful production DANCE MARATHON. In 2016, bluemouth premiered a site-specific immersive performance called IT COMES IN WAVES, commissioned by the Toronto Pan American Games. This original work, devised in collaboration with Necessary Angel and playwright Jordan Tannahill, toured to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017. bluemouth’s newest collective creation, CAFE SARAJEVO, is a dance/theater piece that utilizes a live radio podcast and immersive 360 video to explore the notions of human nature and global sectarian violence.
