Biography

Steffani Jemison is an interdisciplinary artist and writer and associate professor of media at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. In dialogue with interlocutors (living and ancestral), her work connects mark-making, gesture, proposal, projection, and movement.

Solo exhibitions of her work have been held at Lafayette Anticipations, Paris, FR (2025); Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut (2025); Centre d’art contemporain Genève, Geneva, Switzerland (2024); Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnati (2021); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2019); Jeu de Paume, Paris (2017); and Mass MoCA, North Adams, Massachusetts (2017), among others. She has presented solo performances at Lafayette Anticipations, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, Nottingham Contemporary, and other venues.

The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Herb Alpert Foundation Award, and a Creative Capital Award, Jemison’s writing has been published in Artforum, The Brooklyn Rail, and other venues. Her novella A Rock, A River, A Street was published in 2023 by Primary Information.
