Biography

Dr. Sunni Witmer serves as Lecturer in Ethnomusicology at Rutgers Arts Online. Her area of specialty is the music of the Caribbean and Brazil, primarily early twentieth-century urban popular genres and ensembles. She has conducted fieldwork in Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Portugal, Nicaragua, Colombia, South Africa, and Russia.

In addition to teaching, Witmer has presented at international conferences for the Society for Ethnomusicology and the Brazilian Studies Association, among others. Publications include article reviews in Ethnomusicology: The Journal for the Society for Ethnomusicology, and the Latin American Music Review.

Witmer also performed flute and Brazilian percussion with the Jacaré Brazil ensemble at the University of Florida and with various other ensembles including the annual Disney Candlelight Processional and the Bach Festival Society Orchestra in Central Florida.
