Every production, in a studio or in a classroom, is a collaboration. My job is to guide students in turning creative ideas into professional results.
With over 25 years of experience in film, television, and video production, Neal Bennett brings a blend of industry expertise and educational leadership to his work as an Assistant Professor of Professional Practice in the Journalism and Media Studies Department at Rutgers University.
He teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in digital media production, media field production, and video editing, combining hands-on instruction with real-world production techniques.
Bennett began his career in the 1990s as a television writer and producer in Philadelphia before expanding into feature films, live sports, and reality television. His production credits include Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy, ESPN’s World Series of Poker, HBO’s Real Sports, NFL Films, Discovery Channel’s Modern Marvels, TLC’s Trading Spaces, YES Network’s Yankees on Deck, and WEtv’s Bridezillas. He also co-produced and edited Dream Camp TV, featuring Drew Carey, James Cameron, Vince Pace, and Erin Gruwell.
Over the course of his career, Bennett has been recognized with multiple industry honors, including Emmy contributor awards, Telly Awards, and MarCom Awards, acknowledging his excellence in storytelling, editing, and production.
Balancing his teaching and freelance work, Bennett continues to collaborate with top media organizations, develop innovative video solutions, and mentor emerging content creators. He recently edited multiple episodes of Faces & Voices and Citizenship, Institutions, and the Public with former Rutgers President Jonathan Holloway and served as lead editor for a Big Ten Network documentary highlighting the 1983 Rutgers Women’s AIAW Basketball Championship Team.
Bennett’s teaching philosophy emphasizes creativity, collaboration, and storytelling through emerging media technologies. His ongoing professional work ensures that students receive the most current insights into media production, preparing them to thrive in today’s evolving creative landscape.
