Biography

Julia Ramirez is a Jersey City–based contemporary dance artist, choreographer, educator, and arts organizer. She holds a BFA in Dance Performance and an Ed.M. in Dance Education from Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. Ramirez is the founding director of JRamirez & Artists, a project-based dance company creating contemporary works that explore memory, social structures, and human connection amid pressure and change.

Her choreography has been presented at festivals and venues throughout the Northeast and develops through interdisciplinary collaboration, physical investigation, and research-driven processes. Her practice bridges choreography, education, and arts organizing, with a focus on contemporary movement research, community engagement, and fostering artistic dialogue and collective growth.

Ramirez is currently a Lecturer at Rutgers University and a dance educator at the Mark Morris Dance Center and Washington Rock Dance. She previously served on faculty at Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts, where she taught modern dance and composition, and continues to work throughout the tristate area as a guest artist, educator, and choreographer.

Alongside her creative practice, Ramirez is deeply engaged in arts leadership and program development. She works with Stefanie Nelson Dancegroup, contributing to artistic initiatives and community programming, and with Dance Italia, supporting international artistic exchange and educational programming. From 2020–2023, she served as Media and Artistic Assistant with David Dorfman Dance, contributing across artistic, administrative, media, and production roles.
