Biography

Deanne Meek performs in many of the great opera houses of the world, including the Metropolitan, New York City, Los Angeles, Washington, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Seattle, and Dallas Opera Companies, with international highlights including appearances with Opera North, English National Opera, Théâtre du Châtelet, Opera de Lyon, Opera National du Rhin, La Monnaie De Munt, Teatro Real, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Teatro Colon and Teatro all Scala. She is celebrated in the music of Strauss, Britten, Mozart and Handel, and as a proponent of contemporary music has been featured in World Premiers by several of today’s pre-eminent composers. Equally at home in concert and recital, she can be heard on the Telarc, New Focus, Albany, Opus Arte, PS Classics and Virgin Classics labels.

Passionate about the intersections of voice, movement and physical theatre, the mezzo is a NCVS-trained Vocologist certified in multiple somatic disciplines. Certification in Somatic Experiencing and Inner Relationship Focusing integrate her expertise in embodiment studies and “inner states” practices with classical voice training to address wholistic wellness in the singing actor.

Teaching character development, acting and stagecraft, Meek integrates the Meisner Acting Technique, Laban/Bartenieff Fundamentals, Viewpoints, Suzuki and Ping Chong + Company devising methods and applies embodied speech and accent work through training in the Knight Thompson Speechwork.

A native of the Pacific Northwest, Meek has served on the Music Faculty of the University of Washington, where as director of the UW Vocal Theatre Works she also planned, coordinated and directed scenes and full-scale productions. She recently served for three years as Visiting Associate Professor of Music, Voice at the Jacobs School of Music, IU Bloomington and now joins the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University while maintaining private teaching studios in her New York home, Seattle, and online.
