Live captioning is available. \nLex Brown is an artist who uses poetry and science-fiction to create an index for our psychological and emotional experiences as organic beings in a rapidly technologized world. She has performed and exhibited work at the New Museum\, the High Line\, the International Center of Photography\, Recess\, and The Kitchen in New York; REDCAT Theater and The Hammer Museum in Los Angeles; The Baltimore Museum of Art in Baltimore; and at the Munch Museum in Oslo\, Norway. Brown holds degrees from Yale University (MFA) and Princeton University (BA) and was a 2021 recipient of the USA Fellowship. She is the author of My Wet Hot Drone Summer\, a sci-fi erotic novella that takes on surveillance and social justice\, first edition published by Badlands Unlimited. Consciousness\, a survey of Brown’s work spanning the past 8 years\, is available from GenderFail. Brown teaches as a Media Fellow in Art\, Film\, & Visual Studies and Theater\, Dance\, & Media at Harvard University. She is the author of the academic monograph The Biopolitics of Feeling: Race\, Sex\, and Science in the Nineteenth Century (Duke University Press\, 2018) and the general audience book The Trouble with White Women: A Counterhistory of Feminism (Bold Type Books\, 2021). With Jules Gill-Peterson\, she co-edited a special issue of Social Text and with Greta LaFleur\, co-edited the American Quarterly volume Origins of Biopolitics in the Americas\, which was named Best Special Issue 2020 by the Council of Editors of Learned Journals. Schuller’s work has been featured in The Nation\, has been awarded fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and Stanford Humanities Center and has appeared in popular outlets such as The Los Angeles Review of Books\, The Rumpus\, and Avidly. She lectures regularly across North America and Europe.

Live captioning is available. \nJonathan Berger’s work centers around the practice of exhibition making\, encompassing a spectrum of activity concerned with a rigorous investigation of the many ways in which the exhibition site can be repurposed\, and the subsequent potential for that site to allow for an expansion and reconsideration of what art can be and how it can be made. While his projects vary significantly\, the exhibitions themselves are always the “work\,” with the discrete parts contributing to a greater whole. He maintains an interest in abstract and experimental forms of both archival work and non-fiction\, including embodied biography\, portraiture\, oral history\, and documentary\, as rendered through the creation of large-scale\, narrative-based exhibitions made from both constructed and found objects. \nMost recently he presented the exhibition An Introduction to Nameless Love\, which was co-commissioned by the Carpenter Center for Visual Arts at Harvard University and Participant Inc NYC\, and exhibited at each venue in 2019 and 2020 respectively. The exhibition was created over a six year period involving some 47 collaborators in its production. His current project\, The Store\, at the Aspen Art Museum\, exists as a hybrid environment that is at once a place of commerce\, exhibition\, and archive. \nBerger has also presented solo installations at the Busan Biennial\, South Korea; Vox Populi\, Philadelphia; Maccarone\, New York; Karma\, New York; Grimm-Rosenfeld Gallery\, New York; Frieze Projects\, London; Adams and Ollman\, Portland\, OR; and VEDA\, Florence\, Italy. His collaborative and curatorial projects have been presented at venues including Museum of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles; The Hebbel Theater\, Berlin\, Germany; The Queens Museum of Art\, New York; and Performance Space 122\, New York\, among others. From 2013–2016\, Berger served as Director of 80WSE Gallery at NYU\, where he mounted a wide range of collaboratively produced major exhibition projects presenting the work of Ellen Cantor\, Bob Mizer\, Printed Matter\, James “Son Ford” Thomas\, Michael Stipe\, Vaginal Davis\, Susanne Sachsse\, and Xiu Xiu\, among others. Registration is required for Zoom Access. \nKameelah Janan Rasheed (b. 1985\, East Palo Alto\, CA; lives and works in Brooklyn\, NY) is a learner grappling with the poetics\, politics\, and pleasures of the unfinished. With the page\, the wall\, the computer screen\, and public space as her compositional fields\, she creates associative arrangements of letters\, words\, and shapes that invite an embodied and iterative reading process. Rasheed is invested in Black storytelling technologies that ask us to consider ways of [un]learning that are interdisciplinary\, interspecies\, and interstellar. Rasheed’s work has been exhibited internationally and nationally. She is the author of two artist’s books\, An Alphabetical Accumulation of Approximate Observations (Endless Editions\, 2019) and No New Theories (Printed Matter\, 2019). She holds an M.Des from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and a B.A. in Design Media Arts from University of California\, Los Angeles. As a fellow at the Harvard Law School’s Berkman Klein Center for the Internet & Society\, she began the digital Cyberfeminism Index\, which was later commissioned by Rhizome and presented at the New Museum. The printed publication Cyberfeminism Catalog is a 2021 recipient of the Graham Foundation Grant and will be published in Fall 2022. Seu has been a fellow at the Internet Archive\, as well as a designer for 2×4’s Interactive Media team and the Museum of Modern Art’s in-house design studio. She has given lectures and workshops at Barbican Center\, CalArts\, Parsons\, Pratt\, RISD\, Berkeley Art Museum\, among others. SUMMARY:Canceled - Visiting Artist Lecture: Cassi Namoda
DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled. \nImage courtesy of the artist \nCassi Namoda uses painting as an exercise in crossing cultural and historical references between her country of origin and the rest of the world. \nUsing colors of intensities that range from the subtle to the acidic\, applied in raw and expressive brushstrokes\, the artist explores and cross-pollinates religious symbols with literary characters and real people\, forging complex narratives. Namoda studies the unlikely meeting points between antagonistic mythologies and gives new meaning to symbols through boldly constructed images. \nA signature aspect of her work is that it brings together a constellation of external references that the artist then mixes with very personal aspects of her world\, close to how a novelist constructs a story by amalgamating the personal with the universal. In this way\, Namoda’s works sometimes depict friends of hers and people she knows but in a different time or extraneous context. Furthermore\, Namoda’s figuration brings together earthly scenes with oftentimes complex theological contexts\, and her work can bring together the most sacred and symbolic images with the most popular and contemporary. This freedom is one of the central aspects of her painting\, which questions the geographic and temporal limits of stories told but not usually painted.

Registration is required. \nRegina José Galindo is a visual artist and poet\, whose main medium is performance. Galindo lives and works in Guatemala\, using its own context as a starting point to explore and accuse the ethical implication of social violence and injustices related to gender and racial discrimination\, as well as human rights abuses arising form the endemic inequalities in power relations of contemporary societies. \nGalindo received the Golden Lion for Best Young Artist in the 51st Biennial of Venice (2005)\, in 2011 she was awarded with the Prince Claus Award from the Netherlands\, in 2019 she receives the Soros Art Fellowship and in 2021 she won the Robert Rauschenberg Prize. \nShe has also participated in 49th\, 53rd\, and 54th Venice Biennials; Documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel; the 9th International Biennial of Cuenca\, the 29th Biennial of Graphic Arts of Ljubljana\, the Shanghai Biennial (2016)\, the Biennial of Pontevedra in 2010\, the 17th Biennial of Sydney\, the 2nd Biennial of Moscow\, the First Triennial of Auckland\, the Venice-Istanbul Exhibition\, the 1st Biennial of Art and Architecture of the Canary Islands\, the 4th Biennial of Valencia\, the 3rd Biennial of Albania\, the 2nd Biennial of Prague\, and the 3rd Biennial of Lima. \n  \n Register

Registration is required. \nNew Red Order is a public secret society facilitated by core contributors Adam Khalil\, Zack Khalil\, and Jackson Polys. In our current period of existential and environmental catastrophe\, desires for Indigenous epistemologies increase and enterprising settlers labor to extract this understanding as if it were a natural resource. New Red Order—emerging out of contradistinction from the Improved Order of Red Men\, a secret society that ‘plays Indian’— calls attraction toward indigeneity into question\, yet promotes this desire\, and enjoins potential non-Indigenous accomplices to participate in the co-examination and expansion of Indigenous agency. Working with an interdisciplinary network of informants the NRO co-produces video\, performance\, and installation works that confront settler colonial tendencies and obstacles to Indigenous growth. Their work has been shown at Artists Space\, Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin\, Kunstverein in Hamburg\, Lincoln Center\, Museum of Modern Art\, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit\, New York Film Festival\, Sundance Film Festival\, Toronto Biennial 2019\, Walker Arts Center\, and Whitney Biennial 2019\, among other institutions\, expanding the public secret society network across numerous institutional platforms. \n  \n Register

DESCRIPTION:Featuring Dr. Natalia Esling\, author of Experiments in Immersive\, One-to-One Performance: Understanding Audience Experience through Sensory Engagement (forthcoming\, Routledge). Registration link forthcoming. \nNatalia Esling\, PhD is an editor\, copy-editor\, teacher\, research dramaturg\, and mum based in Vancouver\, Canada\, on the traditional\, ancestral\, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples. Informed by her background in dance and theatre\, her academic work focuses on artistic research\, participatory performance\, and empirical audience research\, which are the foundations of her current book project entitled Experiments in Immersive\, One-to-One Performance: Understanding Audience Experience through Sensory Engagement (Routledge). Her research involves collaborating with survivors of traumatic brain injury to experiment with ways of communicating embodied experience\, perceptual difference\, and autobiographical memory through immersive performance. Registration is required. \nShiraz Abdullahi Gallab is a designer\, educator and publisher who was born but not raised in Khartoum\, Sudan. She is interested in language\, form and specificity\, alongside media\, Black studies and popular culture. In her work and research\, Shiraz pursues text as a generative device and publishing as a source of disruption. She is the founding curator and co-author of Samples and Parallels\, a publication that invites participants to respond to an appropriated text. In 2018\, she wrote and released Headgear\, a collection of fragmented passages designed and programmed by Becca Abbe. In 2017\, she published Sapphire Tears\, a soft poster that addresses her emotional downpour. \nShiraz is an Assistant Professor at Rhode Island School of Design and has previously taught at California College of the Arts\, Virginia Commonwealth University\, Purchase College\, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has premiered fifty performance art works around the world\, most recently Jupiter (2021) and Vigil (2021). Her performance memoirs include Swallow the Fish (2017) and Experiments in Joy (2019)\, ( ghost gestures ) (2021)\, and the déjà vu (2022). Her writing has also appeared in Kitchen Table Translation\, New Daughters of Africa\, and Experiments in Joy: a Workbook. Her performance stills and videos have been exhibited in art spaces in California\, Ohio\, Minnesota\, Mexico\, and Brazil. DESCRIPTION:Image courtesy of the speaker \nDigital Presentation: “Performing Disability in Israel On and Off-stage: Blind Women’s Gender Performance and Integrated Dance.” \nDisability culture broadens our understanding of what it means to be human\, teaching us that social equity includes a recognition of the myriad ways and means of seeing\, hearing\, and moving. Dr. Gili Hammer addresses local and global aspects of disability culture through examples from two ethnographic studies\, focused on gender formation among blind women in Israel and on integrated dance projects. These case studies bring together dancers with and without disabilities in Israel and the US\, offering a view into the ways boundaries demarcating “us” from “them” can be negotiated in creative\, artistic ways. \nDr. Gili Hammer is Associate Professor of Sociology/Anthropology at Hebrew University\, Jerusalem Israel. Registration is required. \nDr. Samaneh Moafi is the Senior Researcher at Forensic Architecture\, Goldsmiths University of London. She provides conceptual oversight across projects and in particular oversees the Centre for Contemporary Nature (CCN)\, where new investigative techniques are developed for interrogating environmental violence. \nSamaneh graduated with a degree in architecture from the University of Technology\, Sydney where she specialised in environmental urbanism in conflict zones. She earned her PhD from the Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture with a dissertation on the contemporary history of state-initiated mass housing in Iran and the class identities and gender roles it informed. She taught at the University of Technology\, Sydney\, and the Bartlett School at University College\, London\, and led courses at the Royal College of Arts and the Architectural Association\, London. \nForensic Architecture (FA) is a research agency based at Goldsmiths\, London consisting of architects\, artists\, filmmakers\, journalist\, software developers\, scientists\, lawyers\, and an extended network of collaborators from a wide variety of fields and disciplines. Founded in 2010 by Professor Eyal Weizman\, FA is committed to the development and dissemination of new evidentiary techniques and undertakes advanced architectural and media investigations on behalf of international prosecutors\, human rights and civil society groups\, as well as political and environmental justice organisations. \n  \n Register

Registration is required. \nDora Budor (b. 1984\, Croatia) is a New York based artist and writer. Her main medium is the exhibition\, wherein the characteristics of the given context are amplified\, dislodged\, or re-circuited. Through this set of actions\, an interdependency of meaning between the work and its host is constructed. Image as a conduit of memory and meaning is produced through the cinematic as it has come to be known not technically\, but phenomenologically. \nHer recent and forthcoming solo exhibitions include Kunsthaus Bregenz (2022)\, GAMeC Bergamo (2022)\, Progetto (2021)\, Kunsthalle Basel (2019)\, 80WSE (2018)\, and Swiss Institute (2015). SUMMARY:Design Lecture Series: Louise Sandhaus
DESCRIPTION:Image courtesy of the artist \n“Designing History: Big\, Small\, and Messy” \nThis lecture is presented as part of the fall 2021 Design Lecture Series\, free and open to all. Registration is required. \nLouise Sandhaus a graphic designer and design educator. She is currently faculty at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) Graphic Design Program and former Program Director. Louise is the founder and co-director of The People’s Graphic Design Archive\, a crowd-sourced virtual archive that aims to preserve\, expand\, and diversify graphic design history. Her book on the history of California graphic design\, Earthquakes\, Mudslides\, Fires and Riots: California and Graphic Design 1936-1986\, was published in 2014 by Metropolis Books and Thames & Hudson. It received laudatory attention from The New York Times\, The Guardian (London)\, and The Los Angeles Review of Books\, among many others. In 2015\, the book received the Palm D’argent from The International Art Book and Film Festival (FILAF). In 2019\, her book\, A Colorful Life: Gere Kavanaugh\, Designer\, co-written and designed with Kat Catmur\, was published by Princeton Architectural Press. The book was the subject of full-page L.A. Times article by Lyra Kiltson and was winner of the 2019 AIGA 50 Books|50 Covers competition. \nLouise’s work\, writing\, and writing about her work\, have appeared in numerous publications including California: Designing Freedom\, the upcoming book Baseline Shift: Untold Stories of Women in Graphic Design History\, and was included in the recent KCET Artbound series on California graphic design and activism. Her design work is included in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Bibliothèque nationale de France\, Paris. Louise is a Letterform Archive board member\, former AIGA board member\, former Chair of the AIGA Design Educators Community steering committee\, an AIGA LA Fellow\, and in 2017 was recognized with the Design Icon Award from Los Angeles Design Festival. She received an MFA in Graphic Design from California Institute of the Arts and a Graduate Laureate from the Jan Van Eyck Akademie in The Netherlands. \nArtist Websites:\npeoplesGDarchive.org\nnews.lsd-studio.net \n Register

DESCRIPTION:Archive of Impossible Object: The Globes (2019) \nThis lecture is presented as part of the fall 2021 Design Lecture Series\, free and open to all. Registration is required. \nFiona is University Professor of Design and Social Inquiry and Co-director of the Designed Realities Studio at The New School in New York. She is also a partner in the design studio Dunne & Raby. She was Professor of Industrial Design (id2) at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna between 2011-2016 and was Reader in Design Interactions at the RCA between 2005-2015. Her projects with Anthony include Technological Dream Series\, No 1: Robots (2007)\, Designs For An Over Populated Planet: Foragers (2010)\, The United Micro Kingdoms (2013)\, The School of Constructed Realities (2015)\, and Amn Archive of Impossible Objects (2019 -). She was a founding member of the CRD Research Studio at the Royal College of Art where she worked as a Senior Research Fellow leading externally funded research projects. Registration is required. \nElizabeth Guffey works at the intersection of art\, design and disability studies. Her book Designing Disability: Symbols\, Space and Society (Bloomsbury) argues that designs like the International Symbol of Access or “wheelchair symbol” can alter the environment\, making people more disabled or less\, depending on the design’s planning and use. She is also Founding Editor of the academic journal Design and Culture. Guffey currently heads the MA in Modern and Contemporary Art\, Criticism and Theory at the State University of New York\, Purchase College. \n Register

DESCRIPTION:This lecture is presented as part of the fall 2021 Design Lecture Series\, free and open to all. Registration is required. \nSadie Red Wing (sadieredwing.com) is a Lakota graphic designer and advocate from the Spirit Lake Nation of Fort Totten\, North Dakota. Red Wing earned her BFA in New Media Arts and Interactive Design at the Institute of American Indian Arts. She received her Master of Graphic Design from North Carolina State University. Her research on cultural revitalization through design tools and strategies created a new demand for tribal competence in graphic design research. Red Wing urges Native American graphic designers to express visual sovereignty in their design work\, as well as\, encourages academia to include an indigenous perspective in design curriculum. \nCurrently\, Red Wing serves as a Student Success Coach for American Indian College Fund (Denver\, CO) where she specializes in student retention and resource building for the Native American demographic in higher education spaces.
