SUMMARY:Indigenous Artist Showcase: Dennis RedMoon Darkeem\, "Junctures"
DESCRIPTION:Mason Gross Galleries is proud to present Junctures\, a solo exhibition by Dennis RedMoon Darkeem as part of its annual Indigenous Artist Showcase\, coinciding with our Co-Cureate exhibitions. Working across diverse mediums such as photography\, collage\, sculpture\, performance\, and textiles\, Dennis RedMoon Darkeem’s practice explores themes of community\, craft revitalization\, and the convergence of personal and collective histories. \nThis exhibition highlights the artist’s collage and textile works\, deeply rooted in Seminole patchwork traditions and the repurposing of found materials used in traditional clothing as a form of visual communication. Drawing inspiration from these cultural practices\, Dennis RedMoon Darkeem repurposes materials from his environment to create a personal visual language that serves as a bridge where African-American and Indigenous histories intersect with his own memories and everyday experiences. \nEach work in the exhibition serves as a point of connection\, not only in its narrative and materiality but also in its ability to invite personal interpretation\, reflection\, and engagement from the viewer. The exhibition stands as a testament to the artist’s ability to weave together disparate influences\, creating a space where history\, memory\, and material culture converge. \nMeet the artist at our opening reception\, which takes place 6–9 p.m. September 26. Join him 6–8 p.m. October 4 for a collage workshop in Civic Square Building 110. \nArtist Statement \nAs a Black and Indigenous artist\, my work is rooted in the preservation of culture and the empowerment of young people to reclaim and reimagine their own narratives connected to identity\, land\, place\, and home. Through my artwork\, I seek to inspire\, educate\, and preserve the histories of displaced people who have paved the way for my existence today. I am profoundly grateful to my ancestors\, and my work serves as an homage to their sacrifices\, goals\, and enduring legacies. I strive to keep their stories alive\, preserving their knowledge so that I may pass it down\, just as it was passed down to me. \nCollage is my primary form of expression\, allowing me to draw connections between environment and cultural identity while documenting the present through the use of found objects and traditional craft. My process involves transforming these materials into visual narratives\, creating spaces for engagement\, reflection\, and education within communities. By weaving together personal and collective histories\, my art not only honors the past but also serves as a tool for empowering others to reclaim their stories and explore their place in the world. SUMMARY:Smoking Wall/Invisible Heat: A Welcome Back Exhibition of Mason Gross School of the Arts Faculty\, Staff and Graduate Students
DESCRIPTION:The fall season kicks off with this annual group exhibition featuring faculty\, staff\, and returning MFA students. \nCurated by Ian Byers-Gamber and Francisco echo Eraso \nFrom the curators: \nThe welcome back show\, a Rutgers MGSA tradition on hold since 2020\, returns this year. Department graduate students\, faculty\, and staff were invited to join an open call\, submitting works of their own choosing. Then\, in studio visits and intimate conversations\, the curators engaged with many of these participants on the subject and context of their work: the minutiae of their pieces\, the broader topics of their practices\, and how their political worlds direct their efforts. Other works appear without the benefit of this direct dialogue\, but now enter into productive conversations with their neighbors in the gallery. Smoking Wall / Invisible Heat is thus a survey of the state of art here at Rutgers. \nMany layers of “curation” have brought together all of the artists in this show. An art school first and foremost functions as an institution which curates a “community” through hirings\, admissions\, classes\, facilities\, and levels of accessibility. Each artist within this program is in turn informed by those whom they are in study with. Corina Coughlan displays the complexities of synchronization\, revealing the artistry of human connection through calibration. Rachel Herring creates an experiential video installation to enamor viewers with the present moment in conjunction with a workbook to create balance with the smartphone. DESCRIPTION:On view September 30–October 17\nMason Gross Galleries \nRutgers is proud to present this solo exhibition by Jason Baerg\, MFA alum\, in the second iteration of our annual exhibition series featuring contemporary Indigenous artists. Baerg\, a Red River Métis and member of the Métis Nations of Ontario\, uses laser cutting as a personal means to breathe new life into his nimble configurations\, considered some of the first laser-cut paintings in the world.  \nThe selections on view at Mason Gross School of the Arts are key contributions Baerg has made in the first 25 years of his artistic practice. As a first-generation new media artist\, Baerg has forged fearlessly towards unique ways to utilize emergent 2D\, 3D\, interactive\, immersive\, and fabrication technologies.
