When Dave Cicirelli, an alum of the Department of Art & Design, had his Manhattan gallery debut interrupted by the COVID-19 crisis, he had to pivot quickly to present his work in a different medium.

His kaleidoscopic Vanity Project, an immersive experience that combines video with specialty glass to create floating light, had been installed at the iconic South Street Seaport. To make it work outside of the gallery, Cicirelli filmed, edited, and stitched together footage of the piece to form two perspectives safely enjoyable in stereoscopic video, where the viewer can “walk” through the space and step inside of the infinity cube.

“Initially, I was heartbroken. But in the back of my mind, I always knew the ‘infinity room’ experience was perfect for virtual reality,” said the experiential designer.
