Julia M. Ritter

Chair and Artistic Director of the Dance Department

Julia M. Ritter, PhD, is an award-winning dance artist and scholar whose work demonstrates the integration of over 30 years of training and research in dance, voice, theater, and multidisciplinary techniques. Ritter has received two awards for her research on dance and immersive performance, including the 2016 Selma Jeanne Cohen Lecture Award from the Selma Jeanne Cohen Fund for International Scholarship on Dance (USA) and the 2014 Prix André G. Bourassa for Creative Research from Le Société Québécoise D’Etudes Théâtrales (SQET Canada). Ritter is the recipient of three Fulbright Scholar awards for her choreographic research from the US Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs (2002, 2005, 2008) and in 2004 she received an Individual Artist Fellowship Award for artistic excellence from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Ritter has presented her choreography internationally in Russia, Germany, Brazil, Turkey, Bulgaria, Canada, Mexico, and the Czech Republic and at many venues in New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. Ritter’s choreographic research has been funded by the international Trust for Mutual Understanding Foundation, The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, The American Music Center, The National Endowment for the Humanities, The New Jersey State Council on the Arts, The Puffin Foundation, and the Walt Whitman Center for Culture and Democracy. A frequent presenter at conferences on dance, theater, audience, and performance studies, Ritter has shared her scholarship on dance and immersive performance in Taiwan, Portugal, Canada, Singapore, Turkey, Malta, and throughout the United States. Ritter graduated with her bachelor of fine arts degree with academic honors from the dance department at the Mason Gross School of the Arts in 1992 and her master of fine arts degree in dance from Temple University in 1997.  Ritter completed her doctoral degree as part of the 2010 PhD cohort at Texas Woman's University. Ritter is an associate professor and serves as chair and artistic director of the dance department.
