Student musicians participate in annual Rutgers in Vienna festival

In July 2014, eight new and current Mason Gross music students joined Professors Min Kwon and Yoon Kwon for the annual Rutgers in Vienna festival in Austria. The two-week music festival is under the umbrella of the CME Center for Musical Excellence’s CME Vienna ConcertoFest and the AMA, Altenburg Music Akademy, Austria.

Students perform in a variety of historic settings in and around Vienna as solo performers, in chamber groups, and as soloists with the Vienna International Orchestra in concertos by Mozart, Beethoven, and Haydn, among others.

Students reside in the 12th-century Altenburg Abbey, where they receive intensive instruction in solo and chamber music with Mason Gross faculty members Min Kwon (piano), Yoon Kwon (violin), and Viennese conductor Robert Lehrbaumer.

"Before Vienna, I always struggled to understand the music of Mozart/Haydn/Schubert, etc., but the experiences in those two weeks gave me an eye-opening [experience], which I could never have [had] in my practice room," says Soo Yeon Cho, a pianist in DMA piano program.

The 2014 participants were: Carl Bolleia; Michael Bulychev-Okser; Mijung Cho; Soo Yeon Cho; Rob Grohman; Mia Hou; Natasha Loomis; JungHee Lee; Gimin Hong.
