Visual Arts Brodsky Center for Innovative Print & Paper
Formery The Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper, the Brodsky Center was founded in 1986 by Judith K. Brodsky as an international, national, and regional center for leading-edge printmaking ideas and education. As part of Mason Gross School of the Arts, RCIPP is a learning center where students serve as interns and work with the master printers and papermakers.
Mission
The mission of the RCIPP is to provide the opportunity for artists who are contributing new narratives to the American cultural mainstream to create new work in print and paper in collaboration with master printers and papermakers. The state-of-the-art facilities are located in the Civic Square Building, Rutgers.
Administration
The director of the center is Kathleen Goncharov; assistant director is Barbara Madsen, associate professor, Department of Visual Arts; Judith K. Brodsky continues as the founding director. Anne McKeown is master papermaker. Randy Hemminghaus is the master printer. Amy Lebo is the center's administrator.
Facilities
Five studios provide capability for working in all print media -- intaglio, lithography, silk screen, relief papermaking, photo processes and books. A full computer lab is also available.
Programs
The Brodsky Center invites artists to be in residence to collaborate with the printers and papermakers.
There are three specific programs under which artists are invited:
- A National Printmaking Fellowship Program
- The New Jersey Printmaking Fellowship Program
- An International Fellowship Program
From time to time, other artists are also in residence, either by invitation or contract.
The Brodsky Center receives grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, MidAtlantic Arts Foundation, and other government and private sources to support the fellowship programs.
In the National Printmaking Fellows Program, artists are chosen with the goal of building a body of master print editions that represent cultural diversity.
The New Jersey Printmaking Fellowships are support by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, enabling artists living in New Jersey to make prints at the only master print facility in the state.
The International Fellowship Program is focused on artists from countries undergoing cultural and political change.
Education
The Brodsky Center offers graduate and undergraduate programs in the Department of Visual Arts, Mason Gross School of the Arts. These programs lead to the B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees.
Both undergraduate and graduate students serve as interns and assistants at the Brodsky Center, helping the printers in artist collaborations and in printing editions. If they qualify, the Brodsky Center also will accept other individuals interested in learning more about print and paper processes as assistants.
