Kathleen Tolan

Head of MFA Playwriting

Kathleen Tolan began acting in plays off-Broadway, regional theaters, and in film and TV. Her play Memory House premiered at Playwrights Horizons in spring ‘05, and has been produced at many theaters, including the Actors Theatre of Louisville, Victory Gardens in Chicago, the Seattle Rep and at Trinity Repertory Theatre, where it was originally commissioned. Her first play, A Weekend Near Madison, premiered at Actors Theatre of Louisville, opened at the Astor Place Theatre in New York, and played in numerous productions in the United States and Europe. Other plays include Kate’s Diary (Playwrights Horizons and the Public Theater), A Girl’s Life (Trinity Rep), and The Wax (Playwrights Horizons). Her new play, Chicago Boys, was produced by the Goodman Theatre in 2011 in their New Stages Amplified festival. She has adapted two plays for Classic Stage Company, False Servant by Marivaux and The Forest by Ostrovsky. A recipient of many commissions and fellowships, she is a member of the Dramatists Guild, the Writers Guild and PEN. Tolan is Associate Professor of Playwriting at Purchase College SUNY where she coordinates the Dramatic Writing BFA and the Playwriting and Screenwriting BA programs.
