Music Undergraduate

The Music Department seeks to achieve a well-balanced body of student performers and an excellent faculty/student ratio. Currently, depending upon area of specialization, there is approximately one full-time faculty member for every three to four undergraduates. The relatively small size of the program does not limit the availability of performance opportunities. Singers have opportunities to perform in opera and in five different choral ensembles. For instrumentalists, there are two jazz bands (as well as many combos), two orchestras, three large wind ensembles, marching and pep bands, and several instrument-specific ensembles.

The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) program encompasses three areas of specialization:

  • Performance
  • Jazz Studies
  • Music Education

Students receive weekly 60-minute lessons from their major performance teachers and are evaluated at the end of each term by a faculty committee. Recital, chamber music, and large ensemble experiences comprise an essential part of the program. Theory courses emphasize aural skills, analytical techniques, and the writing of tonal harmony and counterpoint. Instruction in music history includes an introduction to world music, in addition to a survey of the Western tradition.
