MusicUndergraduate Academic Programs

Bachelor of Music

Degree requirements for the B.M. vary according to the student's concentration: 120 credits in the performance curriculum, 121 credits in the jazz studies curriculum, and 126 credits in the music education curriculum. All students are expected to have a functional keyboard ability for second-year courses, and a keyboard proficiency examination is administered before graduation.

All B.M. students take four years of solo and ensemble performance, three years of music theory and aural skills, and two years of music history. In addition, there are course requirements specifically associated with each of the three areas of concentration:

  1. Classical performers take two years of chamber music, a year of 20th-century music, and a year of pedagogical techniques in their major area. Their course of study includes 79 credits in music, 36 credits in general studies, and 5 credits in electives.
  2. Jazz majors take history, theory, and improvisation courses specific to jazz, completing 85 credits in music and 36 credits in general studies.
  3. Music education majors choose either a vocal or instrumental emphasis, but all must pursue the study of orchestration, conducting, and methods for instrumental, choral, and general music. They are also assigned practical experience in K-12 schools as part of their course work. Music education students have 96 credits in music and music education, and 30 credits in general studies.
