- Jury Requirements:
- At the end of each of the first seven semesters of study, the student will prepare
two or more pieces of different styles for a jury examination, which will last about
12-15 minutes. Each semester should be represented by at least two new pieces.
The pieces, which may consist of movements from a larger work, will be chosen in
consultation with the major teacher.
If the jury is not passed, the student will be required to repeat the examination within the
first two weeks of the following semester.
- Grading:
- Each semester's grade will be based upon artistic and technical progress, performance
of assigned repertoire, and jury results. A minimum of 11 lessons per semester is
required for grading.
- Recital Procedures:
-
- The procedures for scheduling the recital are described here.
- Two months prior to the recital date there will be a recital hearing at which at least
two faculty members must be present. The hearing will be about 20 minutes long. The
student will choose the first selection and the faculty will choose at its discretion from
the balance of the program.
- If, in the faculty's judgement, the program is not adequately prepared, the recital date must
be postponed. A new recital date may not be scheduled until a subsequent hearing has been
passed. No student may give a recital for credit without the presence of his/her major
teacher at the performance.

III. Bachelor Of Arts Music Majors
Only four semesters of instrumental or vocal study are required for
the Bachelor of Arts music major (see requirements).
Because all B.A.
majors must pass the Keyboard Proficiency Examination, a student's
needs in piano should take precedence in filling these four semesters
of applied study. Students who have satisfied the piano requirement
may qualify to take lessons on another instrument upon the
recommendation of the appropriate faculty following an audition.
Students taking lessons for 1 credit are not required to perform a
jury at the end of the semester. Students enrolled for 2 or 3 credits
must perform a jury [see the Jury Requirements in section II above].
Any student who is enrolled in private lessons must also be enrolled
in a Music Department ensemble.
- Grading:
- Each semester's grade will be based upon artistic and technical progress, performance of assigned repertoire, and jury results. A minimum of 11 lessons per semester is
required for grading.
