- Semester 8 - No jury is required, as the
senior recital fulfills that requirement.
- Recital Requirements:
- All degree recitals must take place before the last two weeks
in the semester of graduation. See procedures for
Scheduling Recitals.
- One month prior to the recital date there will
be a recital hearing at which at least three
faculty members must be present. The entire
program is to be memorized and ready for
presentation at this time. The hearing will be
twenty minutes long. The student will choose
the first selection and the faculty will
choose a minimum of four more from the balance
of the recital program.
- If, in the faculty's judgment, the program is
not adequately prepared, the recital date must

passed. No student may give a recital for
credit without the presence of his/her major
teacher at the performance.

his/her teacher. Once the test has been

Students in Music Education are required to
perform at least once in Music Assembly
prior to student teaching.
III. Bachelor Of Arts Music Major
Only four semesters of instrumental or vocal study are required for
the Bachelor of Arts music major.
Because all B.A.
majors must pass the Keyboard Proficiency Examination, a student's
needs in piano should take precedence in filling these four semesters
of applied study. Students who have satisfied the piano requirement
may qualify to take voice instruction, either in Voice Class
(701:157-158) or,
upon the recommendation of the voice faculty following an
audition, as a private lesson (701:169-170 etc.). The following
combinations of class and private instruction are possible:
- Option A: One year of class voice. No end-of-semester voice jury
is required.
- Option B: One year of class voice and one year of private
lessons. Students who take a private lesson for
2 credits (45-minute lesson) must sing a jury
for the voice faculty at the end of each semester.
(See jury requirements below.) Students enrolled for
1 credit of private instruction (30-minute lesson)
are not required to sing a jury.
- Option C: In extremely rare cases a student may be granted two
years of private lessons. It must be stressed that the
level of innate talent must be very high for a student
to be permitted this course of study. If the lessons
are for 2 (or 3) credits, the student must sing a jury
for the voice faculty at the end of each semester.
(See jury requirements below.)
Any student who is enrolled in private voice lessons must also be
enrolled in a Music Department ensemble.
- Jury Requirements:
- See the itemized list of requirements.
- For Option B:
- Semester 3 - Progress Jury
- Semester 4 - Progress Jury
- For Option C:
- Semester 1-3 - Progress Jury
- Semester 4 - Level I
- Grading:
- Each semester's grade will be based upon
artistic and vocal progress as well as
performance of assigned repertoire.
- Recital Requirements:
- No recital is required for this degree. Anyone
desiring to give a recital must first pass the
Level II test and be supported by his/her
teacher. Once the test has been passed, a
recital date may be scheduled.
End Of Semester Requirements In Voice
- Progress Jury:
- Six songs learned, at least three prepared by memory
for the jury. Each successive semester should be
represented by six new songs.

- Three more songs or arias in any language,
including English and Italian
At least two selections from each of the categories
must be memorized for presentation.

- Three songs in German
- Three songs in French
- Three songs in any language other than German or French
- One opera aria and one oratorio aria, in the original language
At least two selections from each of the first three
categories, as well as both arias, must be memorized.
At each level/jury, the student is required:
- 1. to demonstrate the appropriate level of technical proficiency;
- 2. to sing the required repertoire by memory;
- 3. to sing on pitch and with rhythmic accuracy;
- 4. to sing with stylistic and textual understanding, using good diction in all languages;
- 5. to be able to communicate the essence of the song with poise.
Bachelor of Music students (performance or music education) who fail
either Level I or II will be placed on artistic
probation and may forfeit any Music Department scholarship funds.
Artistic probation will be removed by the successful completion of
the previously failed Level at the conclusion of the next semester.
A second failure of either Level test may result in dismissal from
the Bachelor of Music program.
Failure to appear on time for a jury may result in a grade of F for
that jury.
