Notes on the Sample 8-Semester Curriculum in Music Education with an Instrumental Concentration

1. In this sample 8-semester curriculum, the distribution of the ten required liberal arts courses has been arrived at so as to achieve a rough balance of credits from one semester to another. Other distributions are possible, and many Music Education majors decide to take some of these courses in the summer. Expository Writing (English 101) is required of everyone and must be taken in the first semester.

Many of the music courses in the sample curriculum may also be taken in other semesters. The distribution that is shown here is one that will work. Keep in mind that not all courses are offered every semester or every year. If you decide to change the suggested distribution, you should consult with your advisor to make sure the new one is OK.

2. On the Music History courses: Music History I-II (700:301-302) must be taken in sequence. Special Topics in World Music will be offered in both semesters, as 700:303 in the Fall and 700:304 in the Spring; either semester satisfies the requirement. One or more sections of Special Studies in Music History will be offered every semester, as 700:419 in the Fall and 700:420 in the Spring; either semester satisfies the requirement. The topics will change from one semester to the next in both World Music and Special Studies.

3. On the Special Topics courses in Music Education: Instrumental majors are required to take two of these -- usually 700:478 Marching Band and one other. A variety of topics will be offered. They may be taken in either the third or fourth year.

4. Music Education Lab (700:386) will be offered in the Fall semester of every year, but the focus alternates between choral and instrumental from one year to the next (F2004 choral, F2005 instrumental, etc). You should take the Music Ed Lab appropriate to your concentration, in either your third or fourth year.

5. On the Methods courses: All Music Education majors take Materials & Methods in Elementary School Music (700:381) in the Fall semester of the third year. Instrumental majors then take 700:384 (Materials & Methods in Instrumental Music Ed) in the Spring semester.

6. Two semesters of lessons on other instruments are required. One of these should be on an instrument from the same family as your major instrument; the other should be from a different family (so a clarinet major might take flute and cello). Percussionists will take both semesters on other instruments. What you take may depend on what's available.

7. On Chamber Music: This requirement may be satisfied by the course called Chamber Music or by one of the small ensembles listed at Chamber Music.

8. The total credits required for graduation are 123. The courses listed in the sample curriculum add up to 134 credits. This is because the 7 credits for Music Assembly do not count towards graduation and the four semesters of piano are not required. Most students will need instruction in piano, however, in order to pass the required Keyboard Proficiency Examination. If you have not had formal instruction in piano, these four semesters will normally be Piano Class I and II (701:159-160 and 259-260).
