Degree Requirements In The Three Concentrations

These links list the requirements for completing the Bachelor of Music degree by concentration.

Anyone who is attempting to complete more than one concentration, such as both Performance and Music Education, must satisfy the requirements for both. Where questions arise concerning the overlap between requirements for different concentrations, consult the Undergraduate Director (<%ugdir%>).

Within each concentration the B.M. degree requirements are described in two different ways. First, the required courses are listed by type: performance courses, theory courses, history courses, etc. Recital requirements and The Keyboard Proficiency Examination are also noted. Then, sample curriculum sheets are provided that show how the required courses for that concentration are normally distributed over eight semesters.

More detailed information concerning performance levels and recital requirements by area (jazz, voice, winds and strings, and keyboard instruments) is provided in the Performance Requirements section.

Students who transfer to Rutgers from another college or university should consult with the Undergraduate Director to establish which Rutgers requirements are satisfied by any courses that have been transferred. (See also B.M. transfer credits.)

Students in Music Education must have a grade point average of at least 2.5 in order to be allowed to do student teaching (see Music Ed Rules).
