Vocalists spend the summer with Maestro Lorin Maazel

Mason Gross vocalists Brunilda Soto, Yuri Park, Max Holman, Nicholas Carratura, Erin Schwab and Shane Brown spent the summer training with Maestro Lorin Maazel at his prestigious Castleton Festival in rural Virginia. The festival ran from June 22 through July 22, 2012. Celebrated mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves opened Castleton this year.

Maazel, former music director of the New York Philharmonic, and his wife, Dietlinde Maazel, established the festival in 2009 on the grounds of their sprawling estate in Rappahannock County. Opera singer and Mason Gross faculty member Nancy Gustafson acts as general manager of the festival, while Maestro Maazel serves as artistic director and chief conductor. Each summer, they bring in hand-picked vocalists and instrumentalists to live and study alongside Maazel and perform under his baton.

In 2011, several Mason Gross School singers and instrumentalists made their Castleton debut. According to Dean George B. Stauffer, this summer, for the first time, Mason Gross students earned academic credit for their participation at Castleton.

Here are a few snapshots from the students' summer at Castleton:
