THE RUTGERS YOUTH JAZZ ENSEMBLE
This elite group is open to serious high school musicians by audition only. RYJE performs in small and large group-settings on and off campus. Participants are challenged to grow in new directions during rehearsals that incorporate ear training, jazz theory and advanced concepts in jazz improvisation into every session. Auditions may be scheduled by emailing extension @masongross.rutgers.edu or calling 732-932-8618.

Ensemble meets Thursdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. | October 25, 2012-April 25, 2013  | Audition dates: To be arranged. Contact Extension Division for scheduling.  

New: MASON GROSS JAZZ INSTITUTE FOR TEENS
Program Overview

  •        Students entering grades 7-12 learn the language and history of jazz in weekly jazz  theory classes followed by participation in lab bands led by accomplished jazz musicians.
  •        Learn to play in a jazz combo as you develop your ear, your personal improvisational style, and a love of jazz! All lab bands are taught by a rotation of faculty balancing rhythm section players with other instrumental coaches.
  •        Jazz Institute for Teens theory classes and lab bands are recommended preparation for the Rutgers Youth Jazz  Ensemble auditions.

JAZZ LEVEL I  - Jazz Theory I and Jazz Combo I

Wednesdays, 6-7:50 p.m.  | November 2012-May 2013
Learn the language of jazz in hands-on, listening-oriented theory and performance classes class suited to the needs of the developing jazz musician.

JAZZ LEVEL II - Jazz Theory II and Jazz Combo II

Mondays, 6-7:50 p.m.  | November 2012-May 2013
Dig deep into the language of jazz through the study of chord-scale relationships, common (and not-so-common) harmonic structures, and analysis of improvisational styles of great players. Emphasis is placed upon developing listening and analytical skills in a manner that encourages personal creativity.
