Renowned dance artist Keith A. Thompson joins Department of Dance

Choreographer, teacher and dancer Keith A. Thompson, who spent nearly two decades performing with the Keith A. Thompsonrenowned Trisha Brown Dance Company, has been named a faculty member in the Department of Dance.

Thompson danced with Trisha Brown from 1992 to 2001; he served as the contemporary dance company’s rehearsal assistant from 1998 to 2001 and has performed with the Bebe Miller Company. At the moment Thompson performs with and acts as rehearsal director for founding director Liz Lerman of the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange.

Thompson’s own company is called the danceTactics Performance Group. His choreography has been featured at the Montpellier International Dance Festival in France, at the Dance Theater Workshop Guest Artist Series in New York City, as well as at the Dance Boom! Festival at the Wilma Theater in Philadelphia, and at Dixon Place and the DanceNOW festival, both in New York City.

Julia Ritter, chair of the Department of Dance, says Thompson is an “excellent role model” for Mason Gross students.

“His depth of experimentation represents the type of innovation and self-discovery that we wish our students to pursue,” Ritter says. “He is someone who demonstrates a refinement of skills as an educator, performer, choreographer and rehearsal director, with integrity and vision.”

Thompson, who has taught master classes around the globe, has said that, among other things, he hopes to share his understanding of the internal workings of the body and the ways in which they influence motion.

“My understanding of skeletal structure plus function…allows me to clearly explore my range of movement choices,” he has said. “Acknowledging how structure relates to movement…builds awareness in motion. This is what I intend to pass on to students.”
