Randy James

Choreography, Dance Appreciation, Improvisation, Modern Technique

Randy James is building an international reputation as a master teacher and choreographer, receiving commissions from dance companies, colleges, and universities across the nation. The New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State honored him with a 1994–95 Choreography Fellowship in recognition of his artistic excellence and named him "Distinguished Teaching Artist."

He has been a guest artist at various institutions, including American Dance Festival, Jacob's Pillow, London Contemporary Dance Theatre and School, International Contemporary Dance Conference and Performance Festival in Poland, Tage des Tanzas in Germany and Austria, Fine Five School in Estonia, Via Danse in Latvia, Dance Space, SUNY Purchase, George Mason University, University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Greensboro, Virginia Commonwealth University, James Madison University, East Carolina University, and Ram Island Dance, among others.

James began his training at Rutgers University as a dance and theater major. His performance background includes summer stock, dinner theater, regional ballet companies, and nightclub revues. He has also performed with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet at Lincoln Center in Aida and was principal dancer with Dan Wagoner and Dancers for eight years.

Since 1993, James has served as the artistic director of Randy James Dance Works, a modern dance company known for its emotionally evocative work. He also founded an all-male dance troupe, 10 Hairy Legs.
