Dance Undergraduate

The Bachelor of Fine Arts program in Dance is for students who want to be professional dance artists and who wish to pursue their goals within the artistic and intellectual climate of a major university. Excellence in modern dance technique and performance, and outstanding creative achievement are the two primary aims of the dance student. The faculty's diverse interests and accomplishments as professional artist-educators ensure expert direction in all three areas of the curriculum: technique and performance, choreography, and theoretical studies.

The dance program includes daily modern dance technique in all four years, supported by regular ballet training and classes in other dance forms. Audition classes assure that each dance student works at the level best suited to advance her or his proficiency. Students have a large number of opportunities.

The faculty of working choreographers and dance artists supports each student's search for original expression. Students begin their study of creative work with closely-supervised problem-solving and improvisation practice. This work continues through courses in choreography and culminates in the senior year with supervised senior projects.

The Department of Dance is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD).
