Sinfonia
The Rutgers Sinfonia, founded in 1995 as Rutgers Philharmonia, draws its membership primarily from the Rutgers undergraduate student body, supplemented by the most talented players from the larger Rutgers community, including students at area high schools who participate in the Young Artist Program of the Mason Gross Extension Division. The Sinfonia performs once each semester, concentrating on the central works of the orchestral repertory. The group was created to address the needs of the nonmajor string player who is unable to play at the level of the Rutgers University Orchestra or to make the necessary time commitment. High school students are recruited via the Extension Division, flyers sent to local school districts and by word-of-mouth.
Programs in past seasons have included the Fifth and Eighth Symphonies of Beethoven, the Unfinished Symphony of Schubert, and such popular works as the Barber’s Adagio and the Rimsky-Korsakov Capriccio Espagnol.
The Rutgers Sinfonia also sponsors a concerto competition for Sinfonia performers each fall. The winner of the competition performs with the Sinfonia during the spring concert.
Audition Information
Brass and Wind placement in Sinfonia will be handled through the Wind Ensemble/Symphony Band audition process
String auditions for Sinfonia will be held on Wednesday, September 5, 7-10 p.m. in Nicholas Music Center. RESULTS
An audition sign up sheet is posted downstairs in the Marryott Music Building
Those auditioning need only prepare a solo work of their choice.
Rehearsals for Rutgers Sinfonia take place Wednesday evenings 7:30-10 p.m. in RH104
Concert date is Wednesday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Nicholas Auditorium. Syllabi and repertoire will be handed out at first rehearsal on Wednesday, September 12 or you may download it here for both fall and spring.
