Merce Cunningham, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet headline "DancePlus Fall" Dec. 3-12

Works by Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, and Taipei Crossover Dance Company are among the pieces showcased in DancePlus Fall, running from Friday, December 3 through Sunday, December 12, 2010, at the Mason Gross Performing Arts Center.DancePlus Fall

Students will present dance sequences culled from various Cunningham repertory pieces in a “mini-event,” while another group will perform for all of us, a dance about youth and community by Benoit-Swan Pouffer, choreographer and artistic director of the Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet. Taiwanese choreographer Xiao-xiong Zhang’s The Butterly Dream, created during a residency at Mason Gross, will round out presentations by visiting choreographers.

“These are three contemporary artists from three different backgrounds making work in very different ways,” says Julia Ritter, chair of the Dance Department. Ritter says she sees the Cunningham work, commissioned for Mason Gross students, as a nod to dance history, while she describes Pouffer as “contemporary, cutting edge.” The Butterfly Dream has offered students a “good experience to work with a choreographer from another culture [in a work] influenced by an Eastern aesthetic.”

The world premiere of parts…as yet…, by Mason Gross Dance Department faculty member John Evans is set for the concert, as well as Moonlight Sonata, faculty member Randy James’ work inspired by memories of his mother’s attachment to Beethoven’s musical masterpiece as a means of escape and expression.
