The Mason Gross Extension Division is set to partner with Central Jersey’s Bravura Youth Orchestra to develop a rigorous course of study called the Young Artist Program. The program will take place at Rutgers University and is aimed at vocal and instrumental musicians ages 9-18.

Students from both organizations will participate in chamber music ensembles as well as music theory courses designed to prepare students for major examinations—Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, Royal Conservatory Music Development Program, and Advanced Placement Music Theory. Elite performers will have the opportunity to audition for acceptance to select collegiate ensembles at Rutgers and for private instruction with participating Mason Gross School faculty members.

"The Bravura Youth Orchestra and the Rutgers Mason Gross School Extension Division share a common commitment to music education and music making at the highest level," says Chiu-Tze Lin, conductor and music director of Bravura Youth Orchestra. "We’re excited about the synergy that comes from joining great teaching and unique performance opportunities. Our partnership will be a beacon for young musicians in the tri-state area."

The program will run Saturdays throughout the fall and spring semesters on the Douglass Campus at the Mason Gross School of the Arts in New Brunswick. Elective classes will be scheduled for Saturday afternoons. Selected course offerings will be available mid-week for students requiring flexibility in scheduling.

"The collaboration between the Mason Gross Extension Division and the Bravura Youth Orchestra exemplifies perfectly the way a university and a community organization can join forces to the benefit of all," says Mason Gross Dean George B. Stauffer.

Bravura, established in 2007, is the preparatory orchestra of the award-winning Bravura Philharmonic Orchestra. The Bravura Youth Orchestra includes pre-college musicians from five counties in New Jersey: Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Somerset, and Union. The orchestra has performed in a concert tour in Taipei, Taiwan in the summer of 2012. It collaborated with the Yamaha Music in Taiwan, performing in the Taipei City Hall and the Yamaha Music Concert Hall.

Young Artist Program members will pursue private instrumental or vocal instruction at the Extension Division or with private studio instructors of their own selection. Performance opportunities for Young Artist Program students include end-of-semester, on-campus recitals for soloists and ensembles, the Community Recital Project (CoRP), the annual New Music Project, and monthly Young Artist Forums which, include master classes with visiting artists. Transcripts containing results of end-of-year jury evaluations will provided to individual program participants for college admissions.

"We look forward to having young Bravura students perform in our facilities, further enriching and energizing the Mason Gross School while receiving academic training from our master teachers," Dean Stauffer says. "Let the music-making begin!"
