Jazz Ensemble to play Blue Note in NYC May 13, 2013

The Rutgers Jazz Ensemble I is set to play the legendary Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City on Monday May 13, 2013. The night will showcase the ensemble playing original student arrangements and compositions. In addition, the renowned Rutgers jazz faculty will be featured in a two-set performance, with Conrad Herwig on trombone, Ralph Bowen on sax, Joe Magnarelli on trumpet, Vic Juris on guitar, Victor Lewis on drums, and Kenny Davis on bass.

Jazz Ensemble I is the top student jazz group at the Mason Gross School of the Arts. They’ve played commercials with Ray Charles, the fifth-anniversary celebration of Harmony Hall in Fukui, Japan, Town Hall, Symphony Space, and, many times, at the Blue Note NYC.

The ensemble boasts a notable alumni list, including Terrence Blanchard, Ralph Peterson, Steve Nelson, Harry Pickens, Michael Mossman, Jerry Weldon, Harry Allen, Jeff Rupert, Yoron Israel, Ken Filiano, Derrick Gardner, Sean Jones, Terrell Stafford, Lee Hogans, Brad Leali, Jim Brenan, Adam Cruz, Frank Lacy, Rob Bargad, John Chin, Misha Piatigorsky, Noah Bearman, Earl McDonald, Orrin Evans, Roger Lent, Riley Mullins, Kenny Davis, and Dave Shumacher.

The director, New York jazz trombonist Conrad Herwig, has recorded 21 albums as a leader. He has been voted No. 1 Jazz Trombone (TDWR) in the Downbeat International Jazz Critic's Poll and was nominated for “Trombonist of the Year” by the Jazz Journalists Association in 2011.
