07:700:231 Special Topics in Music History: Music of the Renaissance

Start with the styles and compositional techniques of the very late Middle Ages and trace their evolution into the new genres and techniques in the Renaissance. The study surveys all the various types and styles of the day and the impact upon them of humanist thought. Since the basic tenets of modern triadic tonality developed in the 16th century and instruments began to play an important role, this is a music with a wide variety of texture, form, and application. Course runs fall semester only. Prerequisite Music 101 or 103
