B.F.A. in Visual Arts

The visual arts program assumes that to survive as a professional artist, a graduate should be trained to make informed choices-- not only the aesthetic ones, but also the practical ones necessary to establish a career. Art-making skills are supported by a solid background in art history and contemporary critical analysis, which is in turn supported by core liberal arts courses. This mix of approaches enables students to graduate from the B.F.A. program in visual arts with the variety of skills necessary for a career as a creative artist in today's diverse and changing art world.

Work toward the B.F.A. starts with foundation courses that introduce the techniques and materials as well as the artistic and cultural issues of contemporary art. Intermediate and advanced courses, as well as courses for the M.F.A., provide concentrated training in the student's chosen area of specialization. While students generally concentrate in a particular area, they are also encouraged to experiment in a variety of areas and media, learning the potential and limitations of each.

Bachelor of Arts

The B.A. program in Visual Arts explores techniques and materials, places, events, and images that are the basis of creative work. The program offers workshops and seminars that seek to develop professional skills as well as an understanding of the cultural and social implications of art. The visual arts program has two major aspects. Studio courses focus on the mastery of skills within specialized media, such as ceramic and sculpture, computer art, drawing and graphic design, film and video, painting, photography, and printmaking. Critical studies courses analyze art in relation to social, environmental, psychological, and philosophical systems and provide a basis for understanding the position of the artist in the modern world.
