ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

In order to enroll in the MPALS program, students must submit a complete application to Rutgers University with all supporting materials required by either the Undergraduate or Graduate Rutgers University office Admissions and the Mason Gross School of the Arts.

  • ESL Minimum Score Requirements: (click here)

    All students applying to the MPALS program must submit ONE of the following standardized English proficiency exams with the following minimum scores (the preferred test of the Mason Gross admissions office is the TOEFL iBT):

    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 60 (iBT), 500 (PBT) Rutgers TOEFL Code is 2765.
    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): BAND 4
    • Michigan English Assessment Battery (MELAB): 68
    • Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE) 40

    Students who fail to receive the minimum ESL score to qualify for the Mason Gross/PALS combined program will be advised to enroll in the PALS only program until their score reaches the minimum requirement stated above. For PALS admissions requirements please CLICK HERE

  • Undergraduate Requirements: (click here)

    • Must be at least 17 years of age and should have proof of having completed high school before program start date.
    • Official High School/Secondary School Transcripts for all applicants translated and meeting the requirements for Rutgers University Undergraduate Admissions.
    • College transcripts for transfer applicants translated and meeting the requirements for undergraduate admissions.
    • Official SAT or ACT scores with writing portion (review of these scores is only centered on the Math portion as English skills are not expected to meet those of a native speaker).
    • $65 University Application fee.

    **Please note: Students who have earned a grade of "B" or better in a college-level English Composition course at an accredited US college (not a foreign affiliate) are exempt from the English language proficiency requirement. English courses that are designated ESL, non-native, or which require a special support component, or any courses taken outside the US, are not acceptable. Please also note that Rutgers University does not accept correspondence or online courses for the language proficiency requirement.

    Once the student completes the minimum required ESL course work with the MPALS program they are expected to retake the TOEFL iBT score (79) with (speaking and listening) and achieve the minimum test score required for admission to their degree program at Mason Gross.   • Graduate Requirements: (click here)

    • Complete the Rutgers University Application for Graduate Admission and submit all supporting materials that are required of your target degree program including GRE scores (for MA and PhD candidates), official translated transcripts from undergraduate and/or all post secondary institutions and 3 letters of recommendation.     • Complete the Mason Gross Supplemental Application
    • Pay the $75 artistic evaluation fee
    • Complete an audition, interview or talent assessment either in person on campus, in their home country during a faculty visit or via recording online.

    Complete an audition on your major instrument. Types of auditions:
    • Live on campus or in your home country for Mason Gross faculty and admissions representatives.

    Students will be notified of their admission to the program by the Office of Admissions at Mason Gross. If admitted, students will then be given enrollment information including Visa instructions and enrollment deposits.

TUITION AND FEES - Cost of attendance

The charts below show the estimated costs for the 2017/2018 academic year at Rutgers for international students enrolled in the MPALS curriculum. The actual costs will depend on a number of variables including where you chose to live, meal plan you select, how many Mason Gross credits you register for, the books required for your courses, and any personal expenses. Below you will find many different scenarios illustrated, as each student's level and speed in which they complete the program may be different. The figures listed below are subject to change and you should anticipate these expenses to increase in the future.

In general students should expect tuition, fees and living expenses to equal a little less than full-time out of state tuition costs for any degree program at Rutgers.  This is roughly between $4500 to $6000 per 6 weeks summer session and $11,000 and $19,000 per semester and includes PALS tuition, credit hour cost for Mason Gross courses taken, housing and meals.  A more detailed cost breakdown is listed below. 

  • PART 1 SUMMER SESSION & HOUSING COST: approx. $4500 to $6000 (click to see more)

    TUITION AND FEES (includes full-time tuition, student fees, health insurance, textbooks, placement testing fee, computer lab fee and administrative fees): $2,903.
    HOUSING - in the summer students have the option of living in a Rutgers University Dormitory (two students per dorm room with a communal bathroom on each floor)
    - RUTGERS UNIVERSITY HOUSING: $245 per week or $1,470 for 6 weeks (the duration of the summer II session)
    MEALS - $175 per week (7 days) or $1050 for 6 weeks (duration of the summer II session)

  • PART 2 SEMESTER TUITION & FEES: approx. $8000 to $16860 (click to see more)

    Students in Part 2 must participate in two 7 week sessions of PALS while attending a full semester of music courses (no less than 2 no more than 5 credits) at Mason Gross School of the Arts. All students take TOEFL BOOT CAMP in their first session, if at the conclusion of Session 1 they receive the minimum TOEFL score stated in the program description above they may move on to part-time PALS enrollment in session 2. If they do not achieve this minimum score they must take a second session of TOEFL BOOT CAMP. Scenario 1 below illustrates the cost of 2 session of TOEFL BOOT CAMP. Scenario 2 is the cost of Session 1 TOEFL BOOT CAMP, Session 2 Part-time reading & writing, plus discussion classes.
    SCENARIO 1: 2 sessions of TOEFL Boot Camp (18 hours/week): $7100
    SCANARIO 2: 1 session of TOEFL Boot Camp 18 hours/week) and 1 session of PALS part-time reading, writing and discussion (14 hours/week): $6500
    Mason Gross Undergraduate Fee per credit hour: $894 (undergraduate students take no lass than 2 and no more than 5 credits at Mason Gross school of the Arts during part 2)
    Mason Gross Graduate Fee per credit hour: $1200 (graduate students take no lass than 2 and no more than 5 credits at Mason Gross school of the Arts during part 2)

  • PART 3 SEMESTER TUITION/FEES: approx. $10000 to $12000 (click to see more)

    Students in Part 3 must participate in two 7 week sessions of PALS part-time obtaining a total of 6 K credits through PALS and 6 credits through Mason Gross enrollment.
    PALS TUITION AND FEES (includes two 7 week sessions of part-time tuition, student fees, health insurance, textbooks, placement testing fee, computer lab fee and administrative fees): $4500
    Mason Gross Undergraduate Fee per credit hour: $894 (undergraduate students take 6 credits at Mason Gross school of the Arts during part 3) or $5364 TOTAL
    Mason Gross Graduate Fee per credit hour: $1200 (graduate students 6 credits at Mason Gross school of the Arts during part 2) or $7200 TOTAL
