AdmissionsYour PowerPoint (CD) Portfolio

Your portfolio (media documentation or CD in PowerPoint format) submission is the most important part of the admissions process and it will be reviewed by the entire Visual Arts faculty. As your entree into Mason Gross, it should represent your creativity, potential for artistic growth, dedication to artmaking and working hard, and offer evidence that you have looked at and read a bit about art and its history. Your portfolio should include 10 pieces of your best work including one from your sketch book.  Mail or drop off your portfolio to:

Submit 10 pieces (media documentation or CD in PowerPoint format )that reflect your accomplishments and emphasize your strengths. Whether your portfolio includes a broad range of media, or concentrates on only a few, it should tell us that you will be successful in our classes including those which introduce new materials and ideas to you.

What your portfolio should include:

  • A minimum of 10 pieces of your artwork (within the last two years). Please include at least one from a sketchbook.
  • One page typewritten statement, which includes a brief description of who you are, and your experience in art and life. It should also set out your major artistic and academic goals, including your reasons for specializing in visual arts. This statement could tell us whether you've worked in art mostly on your own, or that you have had many studio courses. It could note if you haven't (yet) had many opportunities to visit museums or see contemporary work, but that you have favorite artists and periods, and want to expand on your knowledge and critical skills.

Some things to consider when preparing your portfolio:

Are you showing only your best work? Do you show a variety of Mediums? Avoid cartoon action figures, monsters, graffiti art, "cutesy" kittens, traditional portraits (drawn from photographs), glamour and fashion advertising images.

Please send a variety of media including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design and one piece from a sketchbook. If your primary concentration is video, your may send a video.

A word about your portfolio presentation:

Your portfolio must be a media documentation or CD in PowerPoint format. It will not be returned to you unless you include a postage-paid, self-addressed envelope.  CDs may also be picked up in the Visual Arts office after the review process is complete.  Incoming, first-year B.F.A. applicants and outside university transfer students portfolios must be in by Wednesday, March 5, 2008.
