Admissions New Student Information

New Undergraduate Students

Now that you are coming to Mason Gross School of the Arts, we would like to provide you with the following important information:

SELECTING A RESIDENCE HALL

Dance, Music and Theater Arts students are STRONGLY encouraged to select a residence hall on the Cook/Douglass campus.  This will allow you to live in the vicinity of your performance studios.  The Route 18 construction project has slowed transportation between campuses.  Current students find it most convenient to be able to walk from evening rehearsals to their residence hall without using the campus bus system.

Housing is assigned on a first come, first served basis.  The earlier the forms are submitted, the better chance there will be of receiving your housing request.

PLACEMENT TESTING

Rutgers University requires written placement tests in English and math for all incoming first-year students.  Your performance on these in-house tests will determine what level class you will take in these disciplines.  We use the placement test to ensure that you begin your college career in courses at the appropriate level.  The placement tests are mandatory.  Your course registration for fall can not be processed without them.

Students with a Verbal SAT score of 600+ (by the January 2008 test) are exempt from completing the English portion of the test and will automatically be placed into Expository Writing.  If you earned a score of 4 or 5 on the AP English Lang/comp or Calculus AB or BC exam in your junior year, you do not have to complete the placement test in that subject.

Mason Gross students are not required to take a foreign language.  However, if you would like to continue your studies in a particular language in partial fulfillment of your humanities requirement, you should take the appropriate Foreign Language Placement test.  No appointments are necessary.

If there is a documented disability and a need for accommodation, please contact the Office of Disability Support Services to arrange for testing.  Do not arrive on a regular testing date, as you will not receive accommodations.

There are a variety of test dates.  You must register for the test date you prefer at http://oirap.rutgers.edu/testplace.html

Testing begins at 8:30 a.m.  Please arrive on campus by 8:00 a.m.

Make every effort to complete placement testing before the May 5 course selection program.

ADVISING AND REGISTRATION/

PARENTS INFORMATION SESSION

There will be a registration for first-year (except for incoming Theater Arts students and Visual Arts transfer students) for Fall 2008 classes on Saturday, May 10, 2008 on in Nicholas Music Center Douglass Campus at 9:30 a.m..  The schedule for the day’s events is as follows:

VISUAL ARTS TRANSFER STUDENTS

Transfer students in the Visual Arts Department should note that registration will take place beginning April 15th and continue through June 15th on an individual basis, with Frances Maxwell, Undergraduate Advisor.  Please contact her at 732-932-2222 x797 to schedule an appointment.

THEATER ARTS STUDENTS

Since a large percentage of Theater Arts students come to us from out-of-state, there will not be on-campus registration on May 10, 2008.  The Theater Arts Department will hold its on-campus orientation for parents and students on Saturday, August 30, 2008 in one of the theater venues.   Additional information will be forthcoming from the Department of Theater Arts.

Incoming Theater Arts students will be registered by the department for Fall 2008 classes.  The only students who carry Fall 2008 liberal arts electives are Production majors; students in this major will be provided with a list of liberal arts courses scheduled during the open time slots in the production schedule.  Students will be asked to rate them by preference, and the department will then make every effort to register each student for the highest-ranking class that is open.  Students will receive schedules from the Department of Theater Arts and also from the University Registrar in August.

MASON GROSS NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION-ALL MAJORS

New Student Orientation for Mason Gross School of the Arts first-year and transfer students will take place on Monday, September 1, 2008.  More details are forthcoming.  Those students with on-campus housing will be contacted directly by the Office of Residence Life regarding “move-in” times and dates, as well as the residential campus programs.  It is important that you attend your orientation events, as they are filled with important activities and information, and they will give you an opportunity to meet fellow classmates.
