Royal Conservatory Music Development Program (RCMDP) Music Theory Classes

Music theory courses will not be offered during the fall 2017 semester.  Students interested in registering for the spring 2018 semester should email Christopher Kenniff, ckenniff@mgsa.rutgers.edu.  Please indicate the specific class for which you wish to register.

Courses offered at the Extension Division during Spring 2018 
Elementary Music Theory:  Level 1 | Level 2
Music Theory:  Level 3 - Basic Rudiments | Level 4 - Intermediate Rudiments

Music Development classes at the Extension Division are recommended for students ages 10-18.  Small class sizes allow instructors to provide individualized instruction appropriate to the student's development level.


The renowned Royal Conservatory Music Development Program presents a comprehensive approach to music theory that provides students of all levels with the tools they need to become well-rounded musicians.  Classes prepare students for RCMDP Academic Assessments through clear and concise lessons that feature language appropriate tfor students at each stage of their development. The Extension Division is proud to be a Founding School of the RCMDP. Assessments are held on campus twice annually for students of all levels of advancement.

Elementary Music Theory courses lead progressively to Elementary Music Rudiments (for intermediate to late-intermediate level students) and then to Harmony: Basic – Intermediate – Advanced for late-intermediate to advanced level students.  Learn more by viewing the Royal Conservatory Theory Syllabus.


Elementary Music Theory:  Level 1

Day & Time: Saturdays, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.  
Class duration: 1 hour

Fall semester tuition: $300 (does not include materials).
Spring semester tuition: $320 (does not include materials).
Materials: Elementary Music Theory: Book 1, Book 2 and Notespeller, 2nd Edition by Mark Sarnecki. (For purchase online or at the Extension Division office).
Class Description:  Elementary Music Theory Levels 1, 2 and 3 complement any beginner instrumental method.  Classes begin with the fundamentals of music notation and continue through triads, time signatures and beginning musical analysis.  New concepts are reinforced with engaging written exercises drawn from course materials, as well as by creative activities designed by course instructors.  Performance, practical application, and musicality are emphasized at all levels of instruction. Elementary Music Theory: Levels 1-3 prepare students for the requirements of the Royal  Conservatory Music Development Program Preparatory Rudiments Assessments.

Class Description:  Elementary Music Theory Level 3 and Elementary Music Rudiments (Basic level) complement any instrumental or vocal instruction.  Classes continue the study of music notation, foundational harmonic concepts, time signatures and musical analysis.  New concepts are reinforced with engaging written exercises drawn from course materials, as well as by creative activities designed by course instructors.  Performance, practical application, and musicality are emphasized at all levels of instruction. Elementary Music Theory: Levels 3 - Elementary Music Rudiments (Basic level) prepare students for the requirements of the Royal  Conservatory Music Development Program Preparatory Rudiments Assessments. Basic Level of the Rudiments series follows completion of Elementary Level 3.

Class Description:  Royal Conservatory Music Development Program (RCMDP) Intermediate Music Rudiments  complement any instrumental or vocal instruction.  Classes continue the study of triads, rhythmic concepts, transposition, cadences,  musical analysis and musical terms & signs.  New concepts are reinforced with engaging written exercises drawn from course materials, as well as by creative activities designed by course instructors.  Performance, practical application, and musicality are emphasized at all levels of instruction. 
 
Intermediate Music Rudiments prepares students for the requirements of the Royal  Conservatory Music Development Program Intermediate Rudiments Assessments.
